Geothermal utilization began in March 2015.

It is used for heating the spa, public swimming pools, hotel and public buildings.

It is currently in a trial period.

The use of geothermal energy began in the 80s of the 20th century.

It was in mainland Portugal the first project to use heat in a district heating network, for air conditioning and production of Sanitary Hot Water (SHW) for two hotels and the thermal building, and also for heating a swimming pool.

The surplus flow is used to heat a swimming pool and to air-condition and produce of SHW for a hotel located in the vicinity of the hot springs.

The geothermal resource is used for air conditioning the thermal spa and also for producing SHW and heating the outdoor swimming pool of the nearby rural hotel.

Several studies are underway for the development of geothermal projects.

The geothermal exploitation began three decades ago.

The Thermal Spa Complex, in operation since 2001, has a geothermal plant for air conditioning and SHW production in two thermal spas and two hotels.

At the Vau Complex, located about 2 km south of São Pedro do Sul, geothermal heat has already been used directly for heating tropical fruit greenhouses and is currently being reformulated.

Since 2003, the spa has been air-conditioned from the geothermal resource with a temperature of 51°C.

Geothermal use for air conditioning and SHW production and heating swimming pools, with the aid of a geothermal heat pump, raising the temperature from 28°C to 60°C.

Studies are underway for air conditioning and SHW production in the thermal spa and a hotel unit.

Various studies are underway with a view to developing projects for geothermal use.

It is planned to use the resource for air conditioning and pre-heating the water used to produce SHW in the thermal spa, the Águas do Gerês Hotel and the spa next to the thermal spa.
