Geological Heritage – UNESCO - Geoparks
According to UNESCO National Commission, a World Geopark is "a unique and unified area where important geological international locals and landscapes are managed in an holistic conception of protection, education and sustainable development".
There are 5 geoparks in Portugal:
Under UNESCO impulse was possible, given the geological relevance at the international level of certain areas associated with an idea of sustainability in the use of resources, to constitute in 2004 a international organization, “Global Geoparks Network”.
In 2011, under the umbrella of UNESCO National Commission, was built the "Fórum Português de Geoparques Mundiais da UNESCO"
